ABDUL HAMID IS NEW CJ

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 5 (Bernama) -- Datuk Abdul Hamid Mohamad has been appointed Chief Justice while Federal Court Judge Tan Sri Zaki Tun Azmi is taking over the former's position as Court of Appeal President.

In announcing this today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said 65-year-old Abdul Hamid's appointment took effect on Nov 1 while that of Zaki, 62, would be decided later.

Prior to this, Abdul Hamid was acting Chief Justice following the retirement of Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim on Nov 1.

The appointments had been consented to by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin on the advice of the prime minister and after consultation with the Conference of Rulers as provided for under Clause (1) of Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, said Abdullah in a statement today.

The prime minister said the Federal Court was in discussion with Istana Negara on when the instruments of appointment would be handed over to the two judges.

Abdul Hamid will take the oath of office before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
